Weird Players Tables.

(This is a re-write of some extracts from old articles that I wrote for a darts league some years ago.)

Different leagues have different ways of displaying their tables and many have different ways of working them out, but I have not seen any other individual players tables except for the County/Super Leagues that also work on scoring averages rather than just wins. For the league tables that I run, I work on actual wins, both games won and legs won with losses and legs against being further down the sorting order. This can produce some weird effects sometimes though, such as when players go up the rankings one week even when they haven’t played a game in that week. Crazy as this sounds, it is quite logical when you think about it, because another player could easily have “Leap Frogged,” them going down by having lost his match 2-0. This would give him no more games for, but another loss and two more legs against that would push him down in the sorting. If no other players were on the absent players heels then he would go up one place in the listing even though he didn’t play.

Another point, and perhaps some would say an unfair one, is that players awarded BYE’s in a match, because they had no opponent with the opposition being short of players, will go up in the players tables with the bye credited as a win for them. This is always a contentious issue as other players will say they haven’t played and so shouldn’t be credited with a win. I say it is just the luck of the draw and they made the effort to turn up so why shouldn’t they benefit. After all the team gets the win and points in those circumstances which nobody will dispute. However, Crediting byes as wins for the fortunate can produce crazy effects on the player’s tables.

I remember one instance involving one of the player’s wives. It was in a men’s league and at the time a lot of teams were in the habit of simply signing up a few of their wives to make up the numbers for the odd week when they were short. Admittedly the ladies don’t usually have much chance of winning in the Singles games, but can make all the difference partnering a reasonable player in the Doubles. A Few years ago, an interesting thing happened with one lady player in particular who had only played one singles game that she lost two nil, but when a two nil win from a fortunate draw of a BYE in the Singles was added to the tables, she was listed 104 in the player rankings out of over 150 players registered. In other words, without winning a single leg, she was two thirds of the way down, or one third of the way up the singles rankings table with 50 players beneath her! It is a point that both pleased her and surprised me.

And to end on another weird one; by the same token it is quite possible, when constructing a players table to leave the BYE’s in as players (as listed on match sheets) and if you do this, a BYE can easily be halfway up the players rankings in both the singles and doubles, as it could have less losses to its name than half the real players!
