Comic Relief Darts Special.

Although at the grass roots level, the game of darts seems to be losing momentum, which may in part be due to the many and constant pub closures that are going on everywhere, professional darts and TV darts is still as popular as ever. This has led to the “Comic Relief,” team doing their seasonal, special, TV fundraiser, on darts, with it being staged at the great darting venue of the Lakeside Club. To make the most of the fundraiser, the televising of the event, was spread over a weeks TV.
The Format chosen for the competition was Doubles, with games of 501 in a straight Pro/Celebrity knock Out.

Names of the competitors were:-
Lisa Tarbuck partnered with Bobby George, Bob Mortimer & Andy Fordham, Richard Osman & Deta Hedman - The Dark Destroyer, Sean Lock & Ted Hankey, Martin Offiah & Anastasia Dobromyslova, Roisin Conaty & Richie George (Bobbys Son), Lee Mack & Martin Wolfie Adams and Tim Vine with Daryl Fitton. These 8 pairs made for a 3 round competition with the first round being the first to 5, then the Semi’s the first to 6 and the final the first to 8.

Favourites from the start were the two comedians Lee “Hit The Board Mack,” playing with Martin Wolfie Adams and Tim “The Punaway Train,” Vine playing with Daryl Dazzler Fitton. The two comedians nicknames that were printed on their shirts did not somehow seem to be in keeping with the normal nicknames that player adopt, but perhaps they were quite apt really! Both Comedians regularly play darts giving them a decided advantage over some of the other “Celeb’s,” who had never picked a dart up in their lives before the competition! Tim Vine proudly showed off his rather splendid darts trick of tossing a dart up and catching it behind his ear like people used to do with cigarettes in the old days.

There were some great darts thrown during the competition, which the enthusiastic audience seemed to appreciate, although the players definitely “Hammed it Up,” more than just a bit, but of course it wasn’t really meant to be a serious competition even if the competitiveness of the Pro’s showed itself on different occasions!

The final consisted of the two favourites with their partners and the standard of play was worthy of some of the proper televised darts competitions such as the BDO world Championship. Having said that Lee miscounted on his finish in one leg and so did Martin Adams going for the wrong double a couple of games later. Pro’s don’t normally make such schoolboy errors, but it can happen.
Great darts thrown included a near miss by Tim Vine who almost clocked out on what would have been a great 108. Pro’ player, Daryl, hit 2 x 180’s and made his own mistake by going for 99 with a 19, then tops – tops, but instead put one dart out of the board and missed with the other anyway losing him the leg.
After going into the TV interval at 3 a piece, Pro’ player, Martin had no sooner come back in the second half before he hit a 180 as well.

The final leg was a corker with Daryl hitting a superb score of 171 from 191 to leave D 10 for his partner who didn’t get a shot at it as his opponent Lee, who was already on tops, got the finish with his first dart giving Lee Mack & Martin Adams an 8-5 victory over Tim Vine & Daryl Fitton in what was a great, televised, fun, darting event and fundraiser.
