B.D.O. World Championship 2007

This years BDO World Championship looked as though it was going to be dominated by the Dutch contingent who are making their presence felt more and more each year both with competitors and spectators. However their first upset was to see young Klassen, (who won the competition last year) knocked out in the first round by Co Stompé (another Dutch player.)

In the first round there were 7 Dutch players but only 3 remained in for the second. Albertino Essers and Niels De Ruiter were the others. Phil Nixon knocked out Niels De Ruiter and went on to reach the final. Nixon played Martin “Wolfie” Adams in the final and Adams beat Co Stompé in an earlier round. Nixon had a roller coaster ride all through the competition and whenever he started to struggle every body thought he was finished because as a 50 year old, 150 to one outsider, who had tried 20 times to qualify before, he was never expected to do very much. During his match with Niels he was 5-1 up and the Dutchman made a fight for a comeback before the result finished at 6-4 to Nixon. In the final against England Captain Martin Adams the result was similar but in reverse with Nixon going 6-0 down before making a remarkable comeback to finish with the score 7-6 to “Wolfie” Adams. (Web-site.) Martin had qualified 14 times before and narrowly been beaten in the final two years ago by his friend Raymond Barneveld, but this year he won and took £70 thousand in prize money for his efforts.

It was the first year that the mens England captain and ladies England captain had taken both world titles, as ladies favourite, Trina Gulliver, also won the ladies competition, (but she took rather less prize money.) The BDO World Championship has been going for 30 years now since first being won by Leighton Rees back in the mists of time. As everyone knows it is held annually at The Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green in Surrey, but for those who want to follow details about the draws etc each year, there is a web-site with competition and ticket information on that you can reach by clicking here.
